What Is HarderPlate®?
HarderPlate® is a high hardness steel plate for equipment surfaces that take repeated hits from falling rock, dropped ore, and heavy loading. HarderPlate® is hard and tough, so it stays in service through heavy impact when the hits keep coming.
The bhn rating is the Brinell hardness number, a measure of how well the steel resists surface deformation. Higher bhn means more resistance to abrasive wear, and the grade you choose sets the balance between hardness and toughness for your application.
Three Grades, Matched to the Hit
400bhn is the grade to reach for when impact is the main concern. It gives the most toughness in the range along with solid abrasion resistance, which makes it a versatile choice for bucket liners, truck bodies, and chutes that take heavy loading.
450bhn steps up the hardness for sites where 400bhn wears through too quickly but impact is still part of the daily punishment.
500bhn is the hardest grade in the range. It suits severe abrasion where impact loads are controlled and maximum wear life is the priority.
Heat Treated for Toughness, Not Just Hardness
HarderPlate® is quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel. The plate is heated under control, cooled rapidly to harden it, then tempered to relieve internal stress while keeping its strength. The result is a martensitic wear steel made to absorb repeated impact without cracking or spalling.
That is what separates HarderPlate® from plate that is simply rolled to a hardness number. A hardness spec tells you how well a surface resists scratching. The Q&T process is what lets the plate survive a loaded bucket or a full truck drop.
Where HarderPlate® Earns Its Keep
HarderPlate® belongs wherever the hits are hardest. Excavator and loader buckets take the first strike of every dig. Haul truck bodies absorb the full drop of every load. Chutes, hoppers, and crusher areas deal with falling and shifting rock all shift long, and conveyor components and general wear surfaces see their share of punishment too.
HarderPlate® is available for all makes and models, so it works as a practical wear plate solution no matter what your fleet looks like.
Dump Truck and Haul Body Liners
A haul truck box is one of the harshest places for wear steel. Every load arrives as a heavy impact, and then the material slides out and grinds across the floor and tail. Standard liners tend to fail in one of those two ways, and downtime is the one thing that never lets a crew GSD® on schedule.
HarderPlate® is a common choice for dump truck and haul body liners because it takes the impact side of that equation head on. Many sites pair it with RaptorPlate® chrome carbide overlay plate, so the impact zones and the high-abrasion zones each get the material suited to them. On many sites, Raptor Defender® Chocky Bars are also installed in the tail section to protect the area where material flow is most aggressive. This combination approach comes from real operating feedback across mining and quarry sites, and it is designed to extend liner life and cut truck box downtime.
HarderPlate® vs RaptorPlate®: Which One Do You Need?
Raptor offers two primary wear plate solutions, and the right choice comes down to what is hitting the surface.
HarderPlate® is the choice when impact is the main problem. It is tough, tolerant of repeated heavy blows, and still gives strong abrasion resistance when material is also sliding across the surface.
RaptorPlate® is a chrome carbide overlay plate with extremely hard surface hardness and exceptional resistance to sliding abrasion. It is the choice when abrasion is the dominant wear mechanism and impact loads are lower.
